Good seating is rarely defined by a single material or feature.
It is the result of hundreds of decisions made throughout the design and production process. From how a frame is constructed to how a leather hide is selected, cut, stitched, and fitted. Most of those decisions are invisible once the piece is complete, but they determine how it feels, how it performs, and how it ages over time.
Every Karlsson piece is built to order. We do not manufacture for stock, and we do not build around predetermined sizes. Production begins with a room, a requirement, and a conversation about how the seating will be used.
Design & Project Planning
Before materials are selected or production begins, we spend time understanding the project itself.
Room dimensions, seating layouts, upholstery selections, reclining requirements, and comfort preferences are reviewed in detail. A dedicated home theatre presents different challenges than a family living room. A compact apartment requires a different approach than a large villa. The objective is not simply to choose a product, but to determine what the seating needs to achieve within the space.
Every decision that follows is guided by that brief.
Frame Construction
The frame forms the foundation of the seating and influences everything that comes afterwards.
Depending on the product type and configuration, Karlsson seating incorporates a combination of hardwood, engineered wood, and steel components. Each material is selected for its specific role within the structure, providing strength, stability, and long-term durability where it is needed most.
A sofa, a recliner, and a dedicated home theatre chair all place different demands on a frame. For that reason, construction is tailored to the intended application rather than standardised across every product.
Cushioning & Comfort
Comfort is one of the first things a client notices and one of the last things they remember.
What sits beneath the upholstery is therefore just as important as the material on the surface.
We use high-density cold foams and multi-layer cushioning systems selected for resilience, support, and long-term shape retention. Cushion density and layering are chosen according to the seating category and the intended comfort profile of the project.
The goal is not excessive softness on the first day. It is consistent comfort years later.
Leather Selection
Materials are selected for how they will perform in everyday use, not simply how they appear under showroom lighting. We work with European leather, including Italian leather, chosen for consistency, durability, colour fastness, and ease of maintenance. For most applications, we favour high-performance natural leathers that retain the character of the material while remaining practical for daily living.
We do not use bonded leather, PU leather, faux leather, or leatherette.
Every hide is individually evaluated before entering production. Natural variations are part of what makes leather unique, but careful selection helps ensure visual consistency across the finished piece while preserving the character of the material itself. Alongside leather, we offer a range of upholstery fabrics selected to suit different environments, usage patterns, and design requirements.
Cutting & Stitching
Leather is a natural material, and no two hides are exactly alike.
For that reason, preparation begins long before a blade touches the material. Each hide is assessed and positioned to make the best use of its natural characteristics, ensuring that visible areas receive the most suitable sections of leather.
Karlsson combines traditional hand-cutting techniques with advanced CNC leather nesting technology. This approach allows efficient material utilisation while maintaining consistency across the finished product.
During preparation, attention is given to grain direction, panel matching, visible surfaces, and the placement of individual components before upholstery begins.
Stiching & Upholstery
Stitching is where individual components begin to take shape as a finished piece of seating.
Using professional industrial sewing equipment operated by skilled craftsmen, upholstery panels are stitched, assembled, and prepared before fitting. Throughout this stage, materials are checked for alignment, seam consistency, and overall finish quality.
The upholstery is then fitted to the frame and cushioning system, bringing together structure, comfort, and material into a single finished form.
It is often at this stage that a design begins to feel less like a collection of components and more like a piece of furniture.
Assembly
Assembly brings together every element of the project.
Frames, cushioning systems, upholstery panels, and reclining mechanisms are integrated into a completed seating system. Depending on the specification, this may include manual or motorised European reclining mechanisms designed for smooth operation and long-term reliability.
Unlike high-volume production environments, each Karlsson piece is assembled individually. This allows adjustments, refinements, and finishing work to be completed before the product progresses to final inspection.
Quality Control
Quality is not inspected into a product at the end of the process. It is reviewed throughout it.
Checks take place during frame construction, leather preparation, stitching, upholstery, and final assembly. Before a piece leaves the workshop, it is reviewed for finish consistency, stitch alignment, seating comfort, mechanism function, and overall build integrity.
Only after these stages are completed is the seating prepared for delivery.
Lead Times
Every Karlsson piece is built to order, which means production timelines are determined by the requirements of the project rather than inventory availability.
Most custom sofas and recliners require approximately 6–8 weeks from order confirmation to completion. Larger projects, specialised upholstery selections, and dedicated home theatre installations may require additional time.
Unlike stock furniture, each piece passes through multiple stages of planning, fabrication, upholstery, assembly, and inspection before completion. The additional time is not spent waiting on a shelf. It is spent building seating around a specific room, a specific purpose, and a specific client.
That approach has shaped the way we work since the beginning, and it continues to define every piece that leaves our workshop.
