How Leather Quality Is Determined

• Correction refers to buffing the leather’s surface to remove imperfections and applying synthetic fillers to create a uniform appearance.

• Heavily corrected leather feels stiffer and lacks the natural softness and warmth associated with premium hides.

• Lightly corrected offer a softer touch and maintain the natural grain, making them ideal for luxury seating.

However, less correction means lower cutting yield from each hide—raising costs for the sofa maker. For this reason, mass-production factories often opt for heavily corrected leathers, compromising the tactile experience for cost efficiency.

The term “Nappa leather” does not refer to a specific grade or origin of leather—it’s a generic industry term used to describe any soft, smooth, and supple leather finish. Originally coined in the 1870s in Napa, California, the term has since evolved into a marketing descriptor rather than a technical classification.

In today’s automotive and upholstery trade, the term is often misused. Many suppliers label hard, embossed, or heavily corrected leathers with an artificial grain pattern as “Nappa,” even though they lack the softness and natural texture that true Nappa leather should offer.
